what if your child who just turned one, does everything else but does not point or wave, then what? He tries to imitate words, but mostly hums them. His only clear word is Dada
he answers to his name
makes eye contact
plays peek a boo
plays with other kids
claps
gives a kiss when you ask for one
is walking
basically he does everything else.Is not pointing and waving a clear sign of autism?
Sounds like he's doing perfectly fine for a one year old........Remember that children develop at their own pace and what some do at a year old, others do at 15 months.......There is so much concern and paranoia over Autism in the past year or two that it really causes Mothers second guess themselves and their child. Autism does not become evident until a child is well over 2 years old and many times not until they are Preschool aged........Those early warning signs of Autism are not necessarily correct because several of those ';signs'; are also symptoms of Hearing Loss, Plain old Developmental Delay, Speech Apraxia, and many other conditions out there that have nothing to do with Autism.
Unless your pediatrician or a child's teacher becomes concerned, I wouldn't worry about it too much.Is not pointing and waving a clear sign of autism?
He sounds normal to me, every child is different, I still remember when my son was 4 and going to kindergarten, they wanted him tested, so the psychologist says ';I don't think he's ready'; I say ';why';, she says, ';he doesn't put feet on his stick figures';. So, I started him at 4 anyway and now he is a teacher and has 2 degrees in Math, go figure.
here is a fact sheet to give you more information.

Hope it helps.
All though I do not have any experience with autism, I tend to think that there never is one clear sign. He makes eye contact and responds to commands and socializes well. It doesn't sound like he is autistic. All kids do things at different times. If you are really worried speak to your pediatrician, but I think he is ok.
I think he's fine. The eye contact thing is often the first sign, so don't worry about that. Humming is also normal; the whole 'teeth, tongue and lips' coordination aspect of talking is what takes them so long to get certain words out. Dada is simply easier to say than Mama, which is why it's normally first.
You could go through professional testing, but try this first:
Hum a note to him, (or copy him when he hums) and play 'call and response'. Then hum a higher note, then a lower note, and wait for him to copy you. It's an excellent form of basic 'communication', and he'll be super satisfied with himself for 'talking with Mummy'. Extra fun in the bathtub because of the booming acoustics!
He may have a developmental delay and you can never be too safe or too overly cautiaus. My pediatrician kept telling me its normal to grow at their own pace and to just wait it out, etc etc. Turns out my son had autism and was almost 3 before getting help. Im not saying your child has autism...probably not, but why take chances. You can get a free evaluation through your states early intervention program. Maybe he just needs a little speech therapy or whatever to catch up...better do it while they are younger then wait before it gets more pronounced. Good luck,
Maybe he is just late on some things. My kids could not sit up until they were 6 months old, but they could crawl before that! My second didn't start really talking and imitating words until now (15 months). I don't think that you have anything to worry about. Every child develops differently. If you are really worried, take him to a clinic where they test for autism.
There is not one clear sign of autism. I wouldn't worry about him at this point. He's only one and babies develop at their own pace.
All children progress at different rates.
If your child is doing all of those other things then there is NO way he is autistic. My friend's son is a year and he doesn't point and barely waves.
I wouldn't be worried in your case AT ALL.
No it is not an exclusive sign of autism. It could be a sign but only if accompanied by other signs. Your child does not seem to have any of the other signs right now. He should grasp waving and pointing soon. Just keep doing it yourself and he will learn quickly. If you are very concerned check out-Autism Speaks and watch the side by side videos they offer. It really helped ease my mind, as I was a worried mom too.
It is one sign, but it wouldn't mean anything on it's own. Do you point %26amp; wave regularly? If not, there's your answer, if you do he's sure to pick it up soon. The language is perfectly ok for 12mths, I was told by my child health nurse at least 5-6 words (don't have to be clear just as long as YOU know what he means) at 18mths is normal.
I would say that your baby is just fine. Also it's not until they are 18 months when they switch the part of the brain that is the ';adult'; part and have any clear signs. Good Luck.
every child develops at a different pace so i wont get upset about it right now!!
