Is this the fault of the car starter terminal? 10 points for clear and helpful answers?

Today my car couldn't start.

We get somebody to help us jump start the car. During jump starting, smoke came out of the terminal. The person who helped us states that the smoke was caused by the material gathered in the corrosion of the terminal. He recommended that we changed terminal.

Later on we cannot start the car. My dad tried tightening the terminal, but it wouldn't start.

Our terminal have two ';parts';. My dad then took out the first ';part';. He then used the jump start cable to connect our battery to the ';part'; that is closer and still connected to the wire. Am I clear enough in my description?

Anyways, we just want to make sure that this is definitely the fault of the terminal before we buy a new one. Is it the fault of the old terminal? Is this the fault of the car starter terminal? 10 points for clear and helpful answers?
Not uncommon for terminal cables to develop corrosion inside the cable. Corrosion may not be visible to the eye since it is in the cable beneath the rubber coating. Corrosion usually starts at the end near the terminal and then works itself up the cable.

Voltage flowing heats up the cable. Pushing the voltage through corrosion only makes it more difficult to push.

The cable gets hotter than normal, hence the smoke. Is this the fault of the car starter terminal? 10 points for clear and helpful answers?
this is what you do get a cup but some baking soda and water in it then with a tooth brush clean off the corrosion from the terminals.hook back up and see if it starts if it starts go to your local auto parts store and buy a pair of battiry protection rings there red and green.if it doesn't start take the terminals off the wires and with a knife trim back some of the insulation from the wires (about a inch) if there is corrosion present replace battery cables (wire's) and that will fix your problems
sounds like the jump guy had jumpers backwards/if batt is 3yrs old replace and replace any corroded parts/neutralize the whole area with warmwater by the 12oz glass with 2 tablespoons of arm and hammer baking soda/(the type you put in the refrig) keep pouring on in 4 min intervals with fresh mixture until foaming stops/rinse with cold water clear/rehook batt and get er done
